Slab on Grade Foundation Commercial Service

In the building industry, certain types of foundations are generally referred to as slabs on grade, or simply said, a slab on grade foundation. They are often used on commercial properties and residential homes for their low cost and ease of construction.

A slab foundation can be designed with any type of shape or size, but typically have a footing at the bottom that is dug into the ground and anchored to a pier foundation and the top is stabilized using piles that penetrate into the soil. Void filling foam is used to fill the “slab” until its placed onto the foundation. Void fill concrete is used to provide strength and support for the slab and keep it in place until the concrete cures.

Slab-On-Grade With Thickened Slab

This is similar to a conventional foundation except that the actual concrete slab is placed on top of the soil before the concrete cure is completed. This type of slab is usually used when a building needs to be very strong or it has a large area and has to be very thick in order for it not to settle, cap slopes, and allow water to flow through.

Floating Slab vs Slab On Grade

Slab on grade and floating are two different forms of foundations that have their own specific advantages and disadvantages. 

Slab on grade foundation can be constructed at high speed and because the ground does not have to be dug out, this allows for other activities to take place around the construction. This foundation can also be constructed in areas that may be hard to access with heavy equipment. This includes shallow wet areas, where traditional types of foundations aren’t possible. Slab on grade foundations is less expensive than traditional foundations due to their ease of installation and compact form.

Floating slab foundations can be constructed in areas where traditional foundations cannot be placed such as a sunken road or in a small hollow. The disadvantage of this foundation type is that it requires more work to get the job done. It also has limited use for areas where there is not full access to the ground, as this type of foundation cannot be installed without disturbing the ground.

Slab On Grade Insulation Details

Advantages:

  • Can easily be removed if needed and can also be used in other places such as basements and crawl spaces.
  • Can be installed after the concrete has been poured and cured, which saves time during the construction process.

Insulation can be placed on any type of slab foundation to reduce energy loss due to heat transfer. It is recommended that an insulation thickness of at least R-20 be placed on the concrete. Insulation should be placed to cover both sides of the foundation wall, top, bottom and perimeter areas, in order to provide effective heat loss reduction.
